NORTHERN MEETING PIPING COMPETITION CANCELLED FOR 2020
IMPORTANT MESSAGE RE COVID-19
Statement from Alan Forbes, convener of the Northern Meeting Piping Competition:
“It is with much regret that the Northern Meeting Piping Committee has decided to cancel this year’s competition in view of the coronavirus pandemic. Although the competition is still some months away we feel that it is unrealistic to expect conditions to change sufficiently to give us confidence that running it in the normal way would be considered safe, and we do not wish to prolong the uncertainty around it for longer.
“Let’s hope that some measure of normality will have returned by next year and we hope to welcome all of our competitors, judges and sponsors and supporters back to Inverness then.”
Entry to the competition is restricted to those of the highest calibre and competition is intense. Only around 100 competitors are selected to take part in the various events. These include the classic Piobaireachd, March, Strathspey and Reel and Hornpipes and Jigs. The competition also caters for younger players with numbers in the junior competition increasing to some 30-40, reflecting the expanding interest in schools.
